Function and Meaning: The Mbulu-Ngulu reliquaries of the Kota protected the bones of their ancestors, which were kept beneath the figure. The metal coating served as an apotropaic ward against evil spirits. The figure does not portray an individual, but a guardian of the ancestral presence. Interpretation: Among the most emblematic works of African art, they are distinguished by their strong, almost abstract stylization. Their ritual function is combined with an aesthetic value that has fascinated Western artists and collectors since the early twentieth century.
