Original Function: Ntomo mask used in the male initiation rite preceding circumcision. Despite the masculine function of the rite, the masks can represent male, female, or androgynous figures: the gender depicted is determined by the number of horns/crests and has symbolic value. Female masks (even horns) embody values such as nourishment, protection, and social cohesion, considered essential even for young men.
