Carved granary door

Title of the work: Carved Granary Door
Population: Dogon
Cultural area: West Africa (Mali)
Material: Wood
Dimensions: h. 68 x 36 x 2 cm
Function and significance: The Dogon’s carved doors were primarily used to close granaries (gindo), which stored grains, prestigious goods, and sometimes ritual objects. In addition to their practical function, they also served a symbolic protective role: the carved figures served as visual amulets, repelling hostile forces and ensuring the prosperity, fertility, and continuity of the community.
