Cultural Context and Function: Commemorative heads from the Kingdom of Benin are traditionally made of brass, bronze, or ivory, and intended for royal altars erected in honor of deceased Obas. Some wooden examples, like this one, may be more recently produced or for a different purpose, while still retaining the typical iconography and symbolism.
The high headdress and necklaces indicate royal rank, while the white lattice may allude to both fishing nets (a metaphor for protection and the capture of spiritual strength) and coral patterns, symbols of wealth and power.
