Function and context of use: Dan masks are among the best-known of the Ivory Coast and Liberia. They may have recreational, educational, judicial, or initiatory functions. This example, due to its size and decoration (couri and raffia), appears to be reminiscent of dance masks or ritual entertainment masks. Cowries, in addition to being ornamental, have symbolic and monetary value, linked to prosperity and wealth.
