Teresa Kutala Firmino was born in 1993 in Pomfret, South Africa, an isolated village marked by a complex history: a former military settlement, inhabited largely by former soldiers and their families, Pomfret is a place where memory, discipline, trauma, and marginalization coexist in everyday space.

Growing up in this context had a profound impact on the formation of his gaze and his pictorial practice, which focuses on interrogating the legacies of historical violence and the power structures that continue to shape the present.
His artistic research develops through painting, understood as a field of visual and conceptual stratification. Kutala Firmino uses color, material, and composition to construct images that reflect on the dynamics of control, collective memory, and the traces left by colonialism and militarism in the life of communities. For the artist, painting becomes a tool for critical analysis, but also a space for symbolic reworking.

His works are characterized by dense and complex surfaces, in which figures, architecture, and landscapes emerge fragmentarily, as if they were the outcrops of an unstable memory. The compositions oscillate between figuration and abstraction, avoiding explicit narrative. The pictorial gesture is measured yet charged with tension, while color contributes to creating suspended atmospheres, pervaded by a sense of silence, expectation, and unease.
