Young Voices
Entitled Young Voices, this section brings together a generation of mostly young or very young artists, whose research offers a careful and informed look at the transformations of contemporary identities and the relationships between African culture, migration, and diaspora.
Like a choir, where younger voices bring tone, energy, and momentum, the artists presented here contribute strength, clarity, and sensitivity to renewing the cultural debate, introducing fresh perspectives and new imagery.
The choir metaphor also suggests a balance between individuality and the collective dimension: each artist maintains their own independent research, but together these practices build a shared field of reflection. What emerges is a polyphony of experiences and perspectives that reflects the complexity of the present and demonstrates the active role of new generations in redefining contemporary languages and narratives.
Coming from diverse geographical and cultural backgrounds, and often marked by transnational life experiences, these authors reflect on what it means today to grow up and develop across multiple places, languages, and reference systems. In their works, migration is not merely a physical movement, but a condition that redefines memories, belonging, and forms of relationship with the past and the present. Diaspora thus emerges as a dynamic space of exchange and transformation, where roots and change coexist and renew themselves.
Through diverse media—painting, photography, sculpture, installation, and archival practices—the artists address themes related to historical memory, colonial legacies, and the systems of representation that have contributed to constructing often simplified narratives about Africa and its communities around the world. Their works challenge these imageries, proposing more nuanced readings and reflecting the complexity of contemporary experiences.
At the same time, the works express the energy, vitality, and capacity for innovation that characterize African cultures and their diasporic expressions.
Far from static or stereotypical visions, a shifting landscape emerges, one of research, experimentation, and continuous redefinition, in which tradition and contemporaneity dialogue and transform one another.
Taken together, the works presented in Young Voices serve to raise awareness and foster dialogue.
